Nelson Mandela was President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999 but  before his presidency, Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist and he fought to get the respect of black people's rights. In 1962 he was arrested  and sentenced to life in prison. Mandela was in prison for 27 years. When he was released  Mandela led  the negotiations to get to multi-racial democracy in 1994. Later, as president, he tried to introduce policies which aimed at combating poverty and  inequality in South Africa.
Mandela  received the  Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
